Tips and tricks for the search
Search & Find are the most important functions in a store - especially in a catalog with over 40 million products. Often it works right away, but sometimes it just won't work. Here we give you tips & tricks that go beyond an intuitive search.
Quick search
Next to the Schweitzer logo (at the top of the header) you will find the quick search. Here you can make your entries in a search field – it couldn't be faster. Your search terms will be searched in many different fields: Author, description, EAN, year of publication, ISBN, ISSN, media type, series, keywords, title, subtitle and publisher.
It is recommended to use 2 to 4 search terms. With one term there are often too many hits and with 13 search terms there are no more hits. With the 4th letter, search suggestions are made and the number of hits with this search term is displayed.
Filtering in the hit list
In the hit list, you can filter your search again with just a few clicks. Especially with the selection of media type and language you can quickly exclude many hits. But filtering by year or publisher is also possible here. Multiple selections are available in each area. A thematic filtering by classification is helpful if a term is used in different worlds. For example, "Java" is an island in Asia, but it is also a programming language: you can therefore filter by travel literature or computer science.
For lawyers and tax advisors, it is worth restricting your search to the "Vademecum" catalog, which contains books, journals, databases and Looseleaf services on the subjects of law and taxation. Schweitzer's Vademecum has served as a guide for over 100 years.
Advanced search
You will also find the entry point to this search at the top of the header. Here you can enter your terms in the respective search fields, which can then be used for targeted searches. For example, searching with "Peter Lustig" in the author field finds about 60 hits, while "Peter Lustig" in the quick search finds almost 3,000 articles. This way, the search often reaches its goal faster, even if the Advanced Search form looks like a detour at first. In the following, we will give you a few tips & tricks for the individual search fields:
In this field you can enter a keyword that appears in the title of an article. The word search is right-truncated, i.e. the search can continue to the right of the keyword.
Here you can filter by publication date. You can specify the search by year, month or even day (and also combine them).
Please note the following input formats:
By year: YYYY (e.g. 2023)
By month: MM/YYYY (e.g. 02/2023)
By day: DD.MM.YYYY or YYYYMMDD (e.g. 01.02.2023 or 20230201)
Here you can browse at will. This search field is particularly suitable for thematic searches. So if you're not looking for a specific title, but simply want to know which articles there are on a subject area that interests you, we recommend using the classification. With a total of 2,588 classes spanning three to six levels, a wide thematic range is guaranteed.
To reduce the number of hits, it is worth avoiding upper categories and selecting your favorite subject area as precisely as possible. Before you search for a long time, you can also save time by using the filter and entering your topic. If it is available in our classification, it will be displayed for you to select.
If a topic is not represented in the classification tree, you can also use the other search fields. For example, if you are interested in non-fiction or guidebooks about products of the company "Apple", you can combine the classification "Computer Science / Computer" with the search for "Apple" in the search field "Title". This way you will avoid English-language articles about Apple.
Please keep in mind that this is a right-truncated search. That is, to the right of the search term, it can go on as you wish. For example, if you search for "Thomas Mann", works by authors such as "Thomas Mannheim" may also appear in the subsequent hit list.
You can also work with multiple search terms in the field. For example, if you are interested in the correspondence between Goethe and Schiller, simply enter "Goethe Schiller" (separated by spaces) in the search field. Both names must then appear in the author field in order to be considered as a hit.
Here you can specify the price range for the hits. You do not have to name cent amounts.
So if you want the price range to be between €10 and €20, it is sufficient to type in "10" and "20" instead of "10.00" and "20.00".
Our catalog knows a variety of media forms. Therefore, it is worthwhile to reduce them to the ones you prefer, so that the hit list contains even more targeted results.
Similar to the search fields "Title" and "Author / Publisher", this is a right-truncated search. That is, it can continue to the right of the search word as desired.
You also do not have to include the word "Publisher" in the search. For example, if you are looking for books published by Suhrkamp Verlag, simply enter "Suhrkamp" in the search field. Since the publisher is entered in our database under "Suhrkamp", the search word "Suhrkamp Verlag" would not generate any matching hits.
Complete publishing house names are also not necessary. For example, if you are interested in books published by C.H. Beck Verlag, it is sufficient to enter "Beck" instead of "C.H. Beck" as a search term. So you don't necessarily need to know the complete publishing house names.
The ISBN or EAN is an excellent way to uniquely identify an item. You can enter the ISBN or EAN with or without hyphens.
Furthermore, this search field is a true universal tool. In addition to an ISBN or EAN, you can also enter any keyword that covers several search fields at the same time. So if you are unsure in which field you should enter your search word, just do it here.
The following search fields will be considered:
- Author / Publisher
- Description text
- EAN
- Year of publication
- ISBN
- ISSN
- Media type
- Series
- Keywords
- Title
- Subtitle
- Publisher
You can also filter your hits by deliverability. So you may want to exclude not or not yet available titles already in advance to get only already available items displayed as a result.
If you are interested in a particular series, this search field is the right place for you to start.
An example: Under the series "Gelbe Erläuterungsbücher" the publisher C.H. Beck publishes legal commentaries that are tailored to the special requirements of practice. So if you enter this designation in the "Series" search field, all the commentaries in this series will be displayed.
If you check this box, you will only be shown articles that are available in our Schweitzer Vademecum.
This is a renowned, editorially supervised specialized catalog that contains books, e-books, journals, databases and loose-leaf works from the subject areas of law and taxation.
This should be particularly useful for lawyers, tax firms, companies, municipalities and public authorities who are specifically interested in a selected range of legal books.
Here you can conveniently filter for English or German language articles.
