Day 13: Deepening and Integration Today focuses on continuing your processing work while building your capacity for deeper integration of insights and changes. You might work on the same target from yesterday if it needs more processing, or move to a new target if the first one feels complete. Assessing Your Previous Session
Memory Check: Think about yesterday's target memory: - How does it feel today compared to before processing?
- What's the current SUD level when you bring it to mind?
- Do you notice any lasting changes in how you think about this experience?
- How does your body respond to the memory now?
Integration Signs to Look For:
- The memory feels more like "just something that happened" rather than a current threat
- You can think about it without intense physical reactions
- You have new insights or perspective about the experience
- The negative beliefs about yourself feel less true
- You feel more compassionate toward yourself about the experience
Continued Processing Indicators:
- SUD level is still above 3
- Strong physical reactions when you think about the memory
- The negative cognition still feels very true
- New material came up that needs attention
Deepening Your Processing Skills Enhanced Bilateral Stimulation: Today, experiment with different types and speeds of bilateral stimulation to find what works best for your nervous system: Variable Speed Processing:
- Start with slow bilateral stimulation (1 tap per 2 seconds)
- Increase to moderate speed (1 tap per second) during intense moments
- Return to slow speed during integration
- Match the speed to your internal processing rhythm
Dual Awareness Bilateral Stimulation:
- One hand on your heart, one tapping on your leg
- Feel both your heartbeat and the bilateral stimulation
- This helps maintain connection to your regulated self during processing
Breathing-Synchronized Bilateral Stimulation:
- Tap on the inhale with your right hand
- Tap on the exhale with your left hand
- This combines bilateral stimulation with vagal toning
Working with Emotional Intensity Titration Technique: If emotions feel too intense, practice "titrating" or working with small pieces:
- Rate the intensity of your emotional activation (0-10)
- If above 7, "turn down the volume" by imagining the experience from further away
- Process this less intense version with bilateral stimulation
- Gradually "turn up the volume" as your nervous system can handle it
- Take breaks to let your system integrate
Pendulation Practice: Move back and forth between activation and regulation:
- Focus on the disturbing memory for 30-60 seconds with bilateral stimulation
- Shift to your calm place resource for 30-60 seconds
- Return to the memory and notice if it feels different
- Alternate back and forth until the memory feels more neutral
Emotional Wave Riding: When strong emotions arise during processing:
- Don't try to stop or control them
- Use bilateral stimulation while feeling the emotions
- Breathe naturally and trust that emotions will naturally peak and subside
- Notice how emotions move and change during the process
- Use your resources if you need grounding
Advanced Integration Techniques Meaning-Making Integration: As your memory becomes less emotionally charged, focus on extracting wisdom and meaning:
- What did you learn about yourself through this experience?
- How did this experience contribute to your strength and resilience?
- What would you tell someone else going through something similar?
- How does your new understanding change your relationship to this memory?
- What gifts or insights came from surviving this difficult experience?
Somatic Integration: Work with the physical aspects of trauma resolution:
- Notice areas of tension or activation in your body
- Use bilateral stimulation directly on these areas while thinking of your memory
- Imagine breathing into tense or activated areas
- Move gently in ways that feel good to your body
- Practice progressive muscle relaxation after processing
Relational Integration: If your trauma involved other people, work on healing your relationship patterns:
- Identify relationship patterns that developed from this trauma
- Use bilateral stimulation while imagining healthier relationship dynamics
- Practice boundary setting in your imagination with bilateral stimulation
- Envision receiving appropriate support and care
- Strengthen your capacity for healthy connection and intimacy
Working with Complex or Layered Memories Some memories have multiple layers or connect to patterns of experiences. Today's processing might uncover these deeper layers. Memory Networks: Your brain organizes memories in networks of related experiences. Processing one memory might activate others in the same network:
- Childhood experiences of feeling powerless might connect to adult situations where you felt helpless
- Rejection experiences might link together across different relationships
- Safety threats from different times might share common themes
Working with Memory Networks:
- Allow connections to emerge naturally during bilateral stimulation
- Follow the associations without forcing or controlling
- Process each connected memory that feels ready for attention
- Look for common themes or negative beliefs across memories
- Work on healing the underlying patterns, not just individual incidents
Managing Processing Fatigue Extended trauma processing can be emotionally and physically exhausting. Today, pay particular attention to pacing and self-care. Signs of Processing Fatigue:
- Feeling emotionally "wrung out" or depleted
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
- Physical exhaustion despite not being physically active
- Increased sensitivity to stimuli (sounds, lights, emotions)
- Desire to isolate or withdraw from others
Fatigue Management Strategies:
- Take frequent breaks during processing
- Use your resources actively throughout the day
- Engage in gentle, nurturing self-care
- Limit exposure to additional stressors
- Get adequate rest and avoid overcommitting
Session Structure for Day 13 Extended Preparation (20 minutes):
- Resource strengthening
- Body awareness and nervous system assessment
- Target selection (same or new memory)
- Environment setup
Processing Session (60-75 minutes):
- Initial activation and assessment
- Extended processing with breaks...
