The Nature of the Active Palladium-Species in C-C Coupling Reactions with Supported Pd-Catalysts

Palladium-catalyzed cross-couplings, like the Heck and Suzuki reaction, are widely applied in organic synthesis. Yet, the nature of the active species and the surface reaction mechanism with Pd-particles are still discussed controversially. A series of experiments from the variation of several reaction parameters including the transfer of the reaction to the gas phase by specially designed reactor were performed to investigate these questions. The results show that homogeneous catalysis of dissolved molecular Pd-species leads to coupling products and that a true surface reaction on Pd-particles results in the dehalogenation of the aryl halide.

Palladiumkatalysierte Kreuzkupplungen, wie die Heck- und Suzuki-Reaktion, werden vielseitig in der organischen Synthese eingesetzt. Dennoch werden Natur der aktiven Spezies und der Oberflächenmechanismus mit Pd-Partikeln weiterhin sehr kontrovers diskutiert. Um diese Fragen zu untersuchen wurden Experimente mit Variation verschiedenster Reaktionsparameter bis hin zur Heck-Reaktion in der Gasphase in einem speziell entworfenen Reaktor durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass gelöste molekulare Pd-Spezies homogenkatalysiert Kupplungsprodukt bilden während die Oberflächenreaktion auf Pd-Partikeln zur Dehalogenierung von Arylhalogeniden führt.
