The Temper of the Times

This book charts the ways in which Britain has become a divided society. After the hope and optimism of the early post-war years the author suggests there is, against a background of considerable private affluence and a sense of material well-being, much evidence now of regret, despair and resentment, and of doubt and anxiety about the future. Unlike other accounts of recent British history, this book concentrates on attitudes, values and feelings, drawing on a wide range of sources to chart and explain what it feels like to be British.
