Imaging Blood-Brain Barrier Dysfunction in Brain Disorders delves into the intricate structure and function of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), examining its essential role in the pathogenesis of various brain disorders. The book offers a comprehensive overview of cutting-edge medical imaging technologies for visualizing BBB function, both in a healthy state and under diseased conditions. Readers will gain an in-depth understanding of how the BBB influences normal brain function, including aspects such as aging and sleep, and how its dysfunction is linked to serious neurological conditions.
Furthermore, the book explores BBB anomalies in brain disorders like stroke, traumatic brain injury, cerebral small vessel disease, Alzheimer's disease, and sleep apnea. It highlights modern medical imaging technologies, such as MRI, for observing BBB function in vivo. It emphasizes the importance of BBB imaging for monitoring and potentially curing brain disorders, and discusses its potential in the early detection of neurological disorders, allowing for timely and effective treatment strategies.

Dr. Danny JJ Wang is Professor of Neurology and Radiology, Director of Imaging Technology Innovation at the Stevens Neuroimaging and Informatics institute, Keck School of Medicine at USC, as well as head of the Laboratory of Functional MRI technology (LOFT). During the past 25 years, his research has been focused on the technical development and clinical translations of novel functional and physiological MRI technologies. He is a recognized expert in perfusion and functional MRI and have extensive experience in clinical applications related to cerebrovascular disorders, dementia and neurodevelopment. He and Dr. Shao spearheaded non-contrast MRI mapping of BBB water exchange. To date, Dr. Wang has published over 230 peer reviewed papers and 25 review chapters with an h-index of 77 (total citations >22,000). Dr. Wang was elected Senior Fellow of the ISMRM in 2022. Dr. Xingfeng Shao is an Assistant Professor of Radiology at USC Stevens Neuroimaging and Informatics institute, Keck School of Medicine at USC. His research focuses on the development and applications of innovative MR image acquisition in normal and diseased populations, particularly in perfusion MRI, laminar ASL fMRI at ultra-high field and blood-brain barrier (BBB) function. Dr. Shao been actively participating international MRI societies and received prestigious awards such as the ISMRM I.I. Rabi Young Investigator finalist (2023), ISMRM W.S. Moore Young Investigator finalist (2018), ISMRM Junior Fellow, OCSMRM young investigator award and ISNVD young investigator award.
