This work reviews the use of liposomes in immunoprophylaxis, immunological adjuvants and vaccine development. It describes the use of liposome-entrapped antibiotics for treating viral and bacterial infection and reviews the current status in the development of blood substitutes using liposome-encapsulated haemoglobin. The generation and analysis of liposome aerosols for pulmonary delivery is explored and the concept of bifunctional liposomes for immunomodulation described. The development of animal models for liposome-based anti-oxidant therapy is covered and an industrial perspective of liposomal drug formulation strategy is provided. This study also addresses the health and safety implications of the repeated use of liposomes.
