This book offers an anaylsis of adolescence as a socially demarcated stage of life, drawing on data from 186 societies outside of the industrial West. The authors demonstrate that adolescence is indeed practically (but not entirely) universal. They examine the range of variation across cultures in the behaviour of adolescents, and the responses of adults - variation that is influenced by social organization, the family structure, and type of economy.
