The first section, Anatomy: principles of surgery and general surgery deals mainly with the retroperitoneum and the pelvis. The surgical management of common problems, such as the techniques for appendectomy and the repair of incidental hernia are discussed in detail. Extensive coverage of all the new suture materials and their selection, including staples and surgical drains, and wound closure techniques are included. Section 2, Vaginal Surgery, is important since it is one type of surgery that only the well-trained gynecologic surgeon can perform. A new chapter on the management of episiotomies has been added.
