Francisco Sanchez ("El Brocense", 1523-1601), professor of rhetoric and Greek at the university of Salamanca, is one of the best-known representatives of Spanish humanism as translator, editor, and commentator of Classical Greek and Latin authors (Epictetus, Horace, Virgil, Ovid) and Italian humanists (Poliziano, Alciati), but especially as grammarian. His studies of the history of Latin as well as his Greek and Latin grammars laid new foundations for the contents and methodology of the study of Classical languages. In Spanish studies, Sanchez occupies an important place as the commentator of the Spanish poets Juan de Mena and Garcilasa de la Vega.
