Looking individually at the science and applications of each of the 103 elements from hydrogen to lawrencium, this book aims to provide an excellent reference source for scientists in both academia and industry. It is designed primarily as a reference source, enabling the reader to refer to information on an individual element or to a table of physical properties for that element. Amongst the topics discussed are discovery, history, isotopic abundance, ores, refinement, chemical engineering, physics, chemistry and uses of chemical elements. The industries that have grown around each element are described. Many special subjects are treated in detail including the cryogenics of helium and the magnetic properties of lanthanide rare earths. Tables of properties in SI units are included for each element showing orbital and crystal structure and other useful data where available. As far as the publishers are aware, it is the only book in existence which contains both an essay and a table for each element.
