As advances are made into the causes of a variety of birth defects, so are surgical techniques growing in sophistication. Due to these advances, the accurate diagnosis and successful treatment of congenital spine malformations are made much earlier in life. Spinal dysraphism is a congenital condition whereby the spinal tube is closed, causing deformity and disability. This review covers the incidence of the problem, and covers advances in its diagnosis and surgical management.
