This is an introductory text to the region and this updated illustrated edition continues to cover the major themes and developments in Southeast Asia's modern history. Two new chapters have now been added to introduce the reader to the art and literature of the region. Dr Osborne concentrates on the changes that have taken place in the region since the 18th century - the last century when the traditional world was dominant. He surveys developments such as the impact of colonial rule, economic transformation in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the emergence and triumph of independence movements.
