From the reader's report: There is no study like Murray's book, nor is there a peer for its survey of early Syriac literature. The republication if this book was prompted by the need for extensive revisions to the original introduction. This is the primary change the author has undertaken. To his credit, the revisions are mandated by the extraordinary advancements in scholarship witnessed in the past 25-30 years, since the original publication of the book in 1975, prompted in part by the impact of this book when it first appeared. Syriac studies in particular, but early Christianity more broadly, have undergone massive changes as new types of information have become available, and new methods of assessing data have become standard. Murray's revised introduction is a tour-de-force presentation of the past thirty years of scholarship relevant to early Syriac Christianity. It is a magisterial piece in its own right.
