Ophthalmology was the first medical discipline to embrace lasers, starting with the treatment of retinal diseases in the 1960s. Unlike other disciplines where the trend is moving away from the use of the laser in surgery, in ophthalmology it is an accepted treatment option in all subspecialities: eyelids, cornea, iris, ciliary body, lens, retina, and retro-orbital structures. 60 per cent of all laser surgery is ophthalmic surgery. The text presents not only current uses but speculates as to future applications of lasers.
