The importance of arthroscopy is that it provides diagnostic information and the capability of performing certain surgical procedures on a joint through an endoscope without doing open surgery. Originally this procedure was used mostly in the knee, but has now been applied to most of the major joints in the body. Currently the major focus of interest is on the shoulder joint which presents the greatest challenge. After the knee, the shoulder is the most commonly scoped joint. Most orthopaedic surgeons, however, have yet to achieve sufficient technical expertise to confidently perform arthroscopic surgery for all shoulder disorders identified as suitable for arthroscopic treatment.
