This book endeavours to treat the historical origin and development of early Christianity within the framework of Jewish history and religion. The span of time covered is from around 175 B.C. to around A.D. 150. Compared with the numerous treatments of the religious, political, social and cultural factors surrounding early Christianity («Neutestamentliche Zeitgeschichte»), the main issue of this book is Christianity itself in its development from Judaism in Antiquity to its establishment as an organized movement no longer directly dependent on contemporary Judaism.
