In the Introduction the author describes the experience which led him to write the book, and on which much of it is based. He then considers seven themes: these are myth, time, evil, purity, images, renunciation, and woman. Each theme is allotted a chapter in which it is considered first within a Hindu and then within a Christian context. This treatment brings out the differences and similarities between the two traditions in ways which are often unexpected. In the final chapter he examines the implications of his findings both for the theology of religions and for inter-faith encounter.
Rezensionen / Stimmen
«In every way this is a book to be most heartily recommended. Anybody with an interest in relating to Hindus or witnessing in that context will want to read it. ...it is ... profound in its background of scholarship and empathetic understanding.» (Martin Goldsmith, All Nations Christian College, Ware)
«This book should be in every theological library. While it is a specialised wor k, the introduction in its own can be read with great profit by every careful reader in the meeting of faiths. Those who can, should then go further.» (David G. Bowen, Reform)
«A long and unusual experience of India finds expression in Roger Hooker's 'Themes in Hinduism and Christianity'... The book is a most interesting and useful example of a Christian understanding of Hinduism and its texts.» (Peter D. Bishop, The Expository Times)
«Every student who is doing a course which includes Hinduism should have access to this book. ... This is no ordinary comparative study. The author draws on his own extensive - and intensive - experience, and his numerous quotations come from personal letters and conversations over many years, and from Indian writers as well as from western academics.» (Jean Holm, Journal of Beliefs and Values)
«... all missiology libraries ought to have this book, and it would make an excellent supplement to any course in basic Hinduism,...» (Gerhard T. Johnson, Missiology)
