This is the record of a unique correspondence maintained throughout World War I between the editor of "The Morning Post" and his proprietor, Lady Bathurst. Gwynne's letters plot the course of the conflict and reveal much about the military and political powers that guided Britain at the time. Not only does the book present the newspaper's coverage of the war, but it also reveals glimpses of the lobbying of politicians by the press, the influence of Lady Bathurst's drawing-room society on political thought, and the many roles of a highly influential editor, whose early predictions that the war would last four years and that conscription would become necessary, showed great prescience.
