Dr John Warne, a family doctor with a high profile medical political background, takes centre stage in this fast moving story which has the British government using whatever methods it can to keep the population viable. The story, set in 2020, uses flashback to explain why Britain is facing this crisis and why it now seeks to introduce human reproductive cloning. The central characters' own lives and loves are of major importance to the way the plot develops. Nuclear radiation fall-out from Iranian atomic bomb explosions and terrorist attacks on water supplies with gender bending chemicals have damaged the population in a variety of ways. There are more cancer sufferers, more people with infertility problems and more disabled children. Warne finds out that there are government plans to change the cloning law and that illegal experiments among immigrant families have been extended to couples desperate for a baby. Warne is joined in his unremitting media campaign by Mac, a high-flying economist at the Department of Health, who has his own agenda. Their activities bring them to the attention of MI5 and the story gathers pace towards tragedy, betrayal . and an unexpected twist.
