In this study based on new work on Chamberlain's papers, the author presents the conflicting views of Chamberlain, Eden and Churchill from the perspective of the pre-war years, and argues that Chamberlain - correctly foreseeing the long-term danger war would do to Britain - was both brave and justified in pursuing the chance of peace. The author also wrote "Duff Cooper", "Lord Lloyd and the Decline of the British Empire" and edited "Descent to Suez: the Diaries of Sir Evelyn Shuckburgh".
