Oracy is the ability to use talking and listening effectively to communicate and to learn. It forms a key part of the National Curriculum programmes of study in all subjects. Significant research has been undertaken into the development of the spoken language and into the contribution made by this to learning, but teachers have found it difficult to adopt new approaches which might translate these findings into classroom practice. It was against this background that the National Oracy Project was established in 1987. The project had the following aims: to develop the teaching and learning of oral communication and to enhance the use of spoken language in learning.
