Former Anglican priest, John Henry Newman converted to Catholicism and was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1847. He was elevated to cardinal in 1879. At the end of the century, Newman, who was painted by Millais in his cardinal's robes, was acknowledged as one of the greatest churchmen and theological thinkers of the age.
