The skating map of Maelaren is the most advanced map ever made where the needs of the skater are in focus. The map has been developed in close collaboration with Marten Ajne, one of Sweden's most experienced and knowledgeable skaters who, among other things, is the author of the reference work Stora boken om langfaerdsskridsko and Skrinnaren's guide to Maelaren. Marten has processed more than fifty years of ice and weather data and combined this with the accumulated experience within the skating clubs in Maelardalen.
The result is presented here in the form of two maps on a scale of 1:50,000 that cover the entire Lake Maelaren. Over 200 icing areas are displayed with 11 different colored zones, depending on the stage of freezing. In addition, great care has been taken on the lake's current points and weak areas, known snags, ship channels and outflows. The map also contains recommended starting locations, parking lots and suitable land passages. In the book Skrinnaren's guide to Maelaren, an in-depth understanding is given of how knowledge of the different ice-laying areas can be used when planning and carrying out skating trips.
We have come to the conclusion that the best material for a map is Tyvek (R). It is made of a synthetic fiber that makes the map completely insensitive to water and very tear-resistant. A Tyvek map will not tear in the folds or lose color when you use it.
