for Alto solo and SSATB unaccompanied
This imaginative setting of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem encourages the use of evocative bird and wind noises to capture the text's natural imagery. In a fresh, a cappella style, Hawley's charismatic melodies soar through the vibrant texture, and offer plenty of opportunities for soloists. Also published in Breath of Song.

Laura Hawley has been steeped in choral art since childhood, and her stylistic versatility is demonstrated through her output for a variety of artists, from the developing chorister to the professional choral ensemble. Her works have been commissioned, performed, and recorded by esteemed choirs including Canadian Chamber Choir, Pro Coro Canada, and Toronto Children's Chorus. Often influenced by creative community connections and exchanges, Hawley's music has been described as conjuring 'the forces of nature and its effect on the human spirit'. Her piece Alhamdoulilah became internationally famous overnight when a video recording entitled 'Welcome to Canada Syrian Refugees' went viral on YouTube in December 2014. Hawley is also a highly regarded conductor and educator, and directs various treble and mixed choirs as well as teaching theory and composition at university level.
