Microscopy courses are an important part of medical studies, but suitable collections of specimen slides are often not available or are hard to access. In the "Virtual Microscope", which simulates a real microscope, the most important slides and specimens needed in General and Special Histology courses can be examined and studied at various magnifications on the PC. If desired, the "Virtual Microscope" can highlight and label the most important anatomical structures visible at a particular magnification. A quiz program allows both student and teacher to assess learning progress. In addition to a Demo Mode which demonstrates the Virtual Microscope's most important features and functions, there are two possible modes. In the Learn Mode, specimens organized systematically into chapters and subchapters can be viewed at various magnifications, just like in a normal microscope. Approximately 3300 legends and labels showing the most important anatomical structures can be displayed. In the Quiz Mode, a selection of random specimens is displayed and the user attempts to identify them, alone, with a partner, or against the clock.
The program shows where mistakes were made and the specimens that were wrongly identified can be repeated.
