In the assessment of rolling bearing conditions, there is a wide user base in the so-called Level 1 (using characteristic value monitoring) for the interpretation of simple trend evaluations of broadband and narrowband characteristic values from various spectra. Often, the technical background of engineers and technicians is insufficient, especially for preventive vibration diagnosis in fault detection and damage extent assessment.
This is where the book series "Introduction to Machine Diagnosis" and this volume come in. From the physical background to practical application, fundamentals and experiences are presented in an easily understandable manner and illustrated with practical examples. To reliably carry out, accompany, or communicate the findings of a standard rolling bearing diagnosis, the main target group at Level 1 (broadband and narrowband monitoring and trend analysis) and Level 2 (signal analysis) are also provided with practical "fault and damage patterns" and remedies. The content has already been introduced for rolling bearing diagnosis in VDI 3832; the author significantly contributed to the development of this guideline as the chairman.
The in-depth, comprehensive diagnosis of rolling bearings, from the causative rolling bearing fault through the "initial damage to the root cause" and the treatment of practical fault sources to their genuine prevention, are covered in this volume.

Dipl.-Ing. Dieter Franke has been intensively involved in technical diagnostics of machines and specifically rolling bearings for almost four decades, since studying automotive engineering. His professional activities in the industry have been wide-ranging, from vibration diagnostic services to product development and application, as well as user training.
He later continued these diverse activities independently in his own engineering office and today in a company.
As a member of the NALS of VDI and DIN, Dieter Franke influenced the development of modern machine diagnostics; he has become known as an author and co-author of numerous books and technical articles on machine and rolling bearing diagnostics.
