This book explores the development and application of planar slow-wave structures (SWSs), focusing on their critical role in enhancing the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of millimeter-wave (30-300 GHz) vacuum electron devices (VEDs) such as travelling-wave tubes (TWTs). Millimeter-wave frequencies are increasingly utilized across various domains, including communications, electronic warfare, and medical imaging, necessitating the efficient generation of high power at these frequencies.
This book comprehensively covers planar SWSs, including their methods of analysis, simulation, and fabrication. Many examples of materials and configurations compatible with printed-circuit fabrication or microfabrication are incorporated. The recognition and demonstration of the potential of planar SWSs for application in TWTs is presented through detailed examples and case studies. The planar SWSs have a high potential to significantly reduce manufacturing costs and enhance the performance of TWTs, facilitating their adoption in emerging systems such as 5G/6G communication systems, low-earth orbit satellite constellations, automotive radars, and security scanners.
Dr. Chen Zhao earned his B.Eng. from UESTC, China, and Ph.D. from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is currently a Distinguished Professor at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, specializing in millimeter-wave traveling wave tubes, slow-wave structures, and vacuum electron device fabrication. With over 50 publications and 15 patents in the area of vacuum electron devices, he has received multiple awards, including the 2018 Jiangsu Innovative and Entrepreneurial Doctor award and the 2020 Jiangsu Six Talent Peaks award.
Dr. Sheel Aditya is a distinguished academic with nearly four decades of experience in electrical and electronic engineering, having served at IIT Delhi, India, and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He has made significant contributions to areas such as microwave waveguides, integrated optics, optical communication, and RF vacuum electron devices, co-authoring over 270 papers and holding five patents. A Fellow of IETE and Life Senior Member of IEEE, Dr. Aditya's co-authored book Planar Slow-Wave Structures: Applications in Travelling-Wave Tubes (TWTs) offers valuable insights for professionals and academics alike.
