Mary Stanley was born in London to an Royal Air Force father and Irish mother, and moved to Ireland when she was a baby. She was raised and educated in Dublin. Her debut novel, Retreat (2001), was a bestseller. Her other novels include Missing (2002), Revenge (2003), Searching for Home (2005) and The Lost Garden (2006).
With New Island she has published The Umbrella Tree (2009) and The Hijacking of Cassie Peters (2013), as well as An Angel at My Back and Bruno, Peanut and Me for its Open Door series. She has also written numerous short stories, which appear in different collections and on RTE Radio.
