This book is a comprehensive guide for health professionals working with psychoactive drug use and dependence who want to learn the nuts and bolts of the neuropsychology of substance use disorders. It presents the basic foundations of neuropsychology, including a historical overview of studies and research, theoretical and conceptual bases, and practical applications to the area of psychoactive drug use and dependence. It also includes a comprehensive introduction to the history, theoretical models, diagnostic criteria and epidemiology of substance use disorders.
With a special focus on practice and applied knowledge, the volume presents the main methods of neuropsychological assessment of substance use disorders and reviews the most important neuropsychological and psychotherapeutic interventions to treat substance use disorders. Additionally, whole sections of the book are dedicated to explaining the impacts of substance use on cognitive and executive functions and the relationship between substance use and mental disorders in adolescence. Richard Alecsander Reichert holds a PhD in Sciences from the Department of Psychobiology of the Paulista School of Medicine at Universidade Federal de São Paulo (EPM-UNIFESP), Brazil; a BA in Psychology from Universidade do Vale do Itajaí (UNIVALI), Brazil; and a postgraduate specialization title in Neuropsychology and Psychopathology and Mental Health from Universidade do Extremo Sul Catarinense (UNESC), Brazil. He works as a researcher affiliated with the Drug Dependence Unit (UDED) and with the Interdisciplinary Center for Studies in Neuroscience, Health, and Education in Adolescence (CIENCIA), both from UNIFESP. He is a collaborator at the Laboratory of Basic and Applied Cognitive Psychology at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (LPCOG-UFSC), Brazil, and is a member of the Brazilian Association of Behavioral Psychology and Medicine (ABPMC), the Brazilian Multidisciplinary Association for Drug Studies (ABRAMD), the International Network on Brief Interventions for Alcohol and Other Drugs (INEBRIA), and the Confederación de Adolescencia y Juventud de Iberoamérica, Italia y Caribe (CODAJIC).
André Luiz Monezi Andrade is a professor and researcher at the Life Sciences Center of Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Campinas (PUC-Campinas), Brazil. He holds a BA in psychology from Universidade Positivo, Brazil, and a Master's degree and a PhD in Psychobiology from Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP), Brazil. He is a psychologist specialized in cognitive-behavioral therapy.
Denise De Micheli is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychobiology at Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP), Brazil; coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Center for Adolescent Behavioral Neuroscience; researcher at the Science for Education Network of Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (CpE-UFRJ), Brazil; and Associate Editor of the International Journal of Psychology and Neuroscience. She holds a BA in psychology from Universidade Paulista (UNIP), Brazil, and a PhD in Sciences from the Department of Psychobiology of Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP), Brazil, with postdoctoral training in the Department of Pediatrics at UNIFESP.
