CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION TO ADOBE PHOTOSHOP 2025
Adobe created and released Adobe Photoshop, a raster graphics editor for Windows and macOS. Despite its disapproval, Adobe is the most widely used tool for professional digital art, especially when it comes to raster graphics editing, and the name "Photoshop" has become a generic verb (for example, to Photoshop a picture, and "Photoshop contest"). Photoshop provides several color models, masks, and alpha compositing in addition to editing and composing raster pictures on numerous layers. Photoshop supports these functionalities by using its proprietary PSD and PSB file formats. Photoshop has limited capabilities for editing or rendering text, vector graphics (particularly with clipping path for the latter), 3D graphics, and video in addition to raster images. Plug-ins, which are applications created and released separately from Photoshop that operate inside it and provide additional or improved functions, can increase its feature set. Photoshop's original naming system was based on version numbers. But once the Creative Suite makeover was introduced in October 2002, every new version of Photoshop was given the "CS" plus a number. Photoshop CS, for example, was the eighth major edition of Photoshop, and Photoshop CS2 was the ninth. There were two editions of Photoshop CS3 to CS6: Standard and Extended. Photoshop switched to a software-as-a-service membership structure for licensing when the Creative Cloud brand was introduced in June 2013. A variety of tools, such as Adobe Image Ready, Adobe Fireworks, and Adobe Camera RAW, were once included with Photoshop. Adobe creates and markets Photoshop Elements, and Adobe Illustrator in addition to Photoshop. Adobe has also made a full version of Photoshop available on the iPad as of November 2019. Although it will initially just have a few features, Adobe intends to expand them. The Adobe Photoshop Group is the aggregate name for them.
"Photoshop Document" (.PSD) is the default file extension for Photoshop files. All of Photoshop's features, such as layers with masks, transparency, text, alpha channels, spot colors, clipping paths, and duotone settings, are supported by a picture stored in a PSD file. On the other hand, a lot of other files formats (like JPG or GIF) limit material to offer streamlined, predictable functionality. A PSD file can be no more than two gigabytes and can have a maximum width and height of 30,000 pixels. The extension can also be used by Photoshop to create and use files. The acronym for "Photoshop Big" (sometimes called "large document format") is PSB. A PSB file is an extension of a PSD file, with a storage capacity of around 4 exabytes and an allowed width and height of 300,000 pixels. In both PSD and PSB files, documentation is included. Due to Photoshop's widespread use, PSD files are also somewhat supported by the majority of rival programs, such as GIMP, Affinity Photo, and Clip Studio Paint. The .PSD file format is compatible with Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere Pro, and After Effects, among other Adobe applications. Photoshop plugins, also known as plug-ins, are add-on programs that increase the capabilities of Photoshop. The majority are developed by third parties, while Adobe produces several, such as Adobe Camera Raw. Some software is commercial, while others are free. While some plugins can be used as stand-alone programs, the majority only function with Photoshop or hosts that are compatible with Photoshop. Plugins come in a variety of forms, including automation, color correction, filtering, exporting, and importing. The most often used plugins are those that are found under Photoshop's Filter menu and are referred to as 8bf plugins. Filter plugins can either produce content or alter the existing image. Here are a few well-known plugin categories and the companies that are linked to them:
? Color correction plugins (OnOne Software, Topaz Labs Software, The Plugin Site, etc.) ? Special effects plugins (Auto FX Software, AV Bros., Flaming Pear Software, etc.) ? 3D effects plugins (Strata, etc.) Adobe Camera Raw, sometimes referred to as ACR or Camera Raw, is a unique plugin that is provided by Adobe for free. Its main purpose is to read and analyze raw picture files so that Photoshop can process the final photographs. Additionally, it may be utilized from within Adobe Bridge.
