Berlin's real estate market is still booming, neighborhoods are "developed", people are forced out of their living environments. Residential, work and commercial spaces become investments for real estate corporations, trust funds, and anonymous owners, while a politicized tenants' movement demands the right to the city for all.
But who are the real players behind the economic exploitation of urban space? What allows them to act the way they do - and how can their actions be politically and societally monitored, controlled, and thwarted?
X Properties examines the impact of financial capital on the social and cultural production of the city, its forms of relationality and subjectivity. The book is published on the occasion of the homonymous research and event project at neue Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst (nGbK). It combines case studies from Berlin with global perspectives on the de-/financialization of the city.

Künstlerin
Naomi Hennig lebt in Berlin, wo sie als Forscherin, Künstlerin, Kuratorin, Redakteurin und Projektkoordinatorin arbeitet. Sie hat an der ECA Edinburgh und der UdK Berlin studiert und ist seitdem an einer Reihe künstlerisch geführter Initiativen beteiligt. Sie hat an kuratorischen Projekten mitgearbeitet, darunter eine Ausstellung über die Artist Placement Group (APG) mit Ulrike Jordan, die im Kunstraum Kreuzberg / Bethanien, Berlin, und in der Summerhall, Edinburgh (2015/16), gezeigt wurde. 2012 war sie Ko-Kuratorin des Forschungs- und Ausstellungsprojekts Spaceship Yugoslavia in der nGbK Berlin. Zwischen 2013 und 2015 organisierte sie das Ausstellungsprogramm der Galerie im Turm.
Ihre künstlerische und kuratorische Forschung dreht sich um die Memorialisierung politischer Mikrogeschichten sowie um die Beziehungen zwischen Ort, Geschichte, Ökologie und Wirtschaft.
Künstler
Florian Wüst arbeitet als Filmkurator, Künstler und Verleger in Berlin. Er kuratiert Filmprogramme und Ausstellungen für internationale Kunstinstitutionen, Kinos und Festivals. Von 2016 bis 2020 war er Film- und Videokurator der transmediale. Jüngste kuratorische Projekte umfassen das IMPAKT Festival 2022 The Curse of Smooth Operations in Utrecht, gemeinsam mit Erik Bünger, sowie zwei Ausstellungen im Centro Internacional de Cultura Contemporánea Tabakalera, San Sebastián: Zin Ex. From Abstraction to Algorithm (2020) und Zin Ex. Body and Architecture (2021). Wüst ist Mitgründer der Berliner Hefte zu Geschichte und Gegenwart der Stadt, einer fortlaufenden Reihe von Publikationen, die die sozialen, kulturellen und ökonomischen Veränderungen in Berlin und anderen Städten thematisiert.

Joerg Franzbecker co-produziert, -kuratiert und -publiziert in wechselnden kollektiven Zusammenhängen verschiedene, recherchebasierte und wissensproduzierende Formate im Kontext von Kunst und Stadtraum und ist Mit-Verleger der Berliner Hefte zu Geschichte und Gegenwart der Stadt.
