Accommodation in Singapore is generally more expensive than in other countries in the region, but still a bargain compared with what you pay in the US or Europe.
Almost all the accommodations in Singapore are air-conditioned and staff can be expected to speak basic English even at low-budget hotels or hostels. Peak periods for hotels in Singapore are during June, December and September which are when crowds flock to the island for the Formula One Grand Prix. Almost all international and well-known hotel chains like Shangri-La and Holiday Inn can be found in Singapore.
Types of Accommodations
Forms of accommodations in Singapore are aplenty so visitors do not have to fear if they fail to get a room reservation at their desired hotel or hostel. They range from budget to luxury accommodations according to the rates of their rooms (or beds, in the case of hostels). Advance booking is still highly recommended as rates are usually cheaper when booked early.
Budget Accommodation
The price range for budget accommodations is anything below S$60. There are very few budget hotels in Singapore and most of the budget accommodations are hostels.
The majority of hostels are located outside of the city centre in areas like Little India, Katong and Joo Chiat. Offering none of the facilities of hotels, hostels in Singapore are still relatively value for money as almost all are fully air-conditioned and quite clean. Breakfast may or may not be included in the price so it is best to ask when in doubt. In addition, hostels are great places to meet fellow travellers and find out some quirky facts about Singapore as most of the hostels offer tours. Popular hostels include the InnCrowd in Little India and Betel Box in Joo Chiat.
Budget hotels are mostly found in the Geylang and Mountbatten area. Rooms at these budget hotels can be a little dirty and service non-existent, especially in the case of Geylang as it is also a famous red light district. Such hotels cater mainly to couples having a rendezvous, and don't bother with personalized service.
Between budget hotels and hostels, hostels offer better accommodation and are recommended for backpackers.
Mid-Range Accommodation
Mid-range accommodations range from S$60-200 per room per night. The majority of hotels in Singapore fall under this category. Even though the rates for these hotels are cheaper than the top-end or luxury options, mid-range accommodations are still of a relatively high standard. Due to their large numbers, mid-range hotels can be found all throughout the island although more are found outside of or on the outskirts of the city centre. Most have basic facilities like business centres and some even have swimming pools and restaurants.
The hotels on the lower end of the mid-range price spectrum may sometimes have staff that is not very fluent in English. Rooms at the Hotel 81 and Fragrance Hotel chains are simply furnished and are usually not as spacious as the rooms at top-end or luxury hotels, but you can bet that they'll be very clean. Mid-range accommodations are generally popular with tourists due to their relatively cheap rates combined with decent rooms and service.
Top-End Accommodation
Top-end accommodations range from S$200-400 per room per night. Quite a number of hotels found in the city centre are top-end hotels and they cater mainly to business travellers and tourists with a little cash to spare. These hotels may not be as opulent as the luxury accommodations but they offer excellent service and comfortable rooms as well. Breakfast and free use of the hotel facilities are almost always included in the price of the room.
Most of the top-end hotels like the Meritus Mandarin Hotel and Holiday Inn Singapore Orchard City Centre are located near the Central Business District as well as the shopping strip of Orchard Road. Top-end hotels include boutique hotels that are usually found in the Tanjong Pagar or Chinatown area. Although the number of rooms in these hotels is not large, they offer a unique Singaporean experience to visitors as they are usually housed in restored shophouses. Top-end hotels are popular with business travellers due to their location, good service and comfortable rooms while not being overly expensive, but we wouldn't recommended them for the average traveller.
Luxury Accommodation
Luxury accommodations cost above S$400 per room per night.
There are not many luxury hotels in Singapore but the ones that can be found are of the highest standards as they are part of international chains and would likely make for an unforgettable experience. These hotels are located mostly along Orchard Road or in the greater Orchard area.
Hotels like the Shangri-La and Grand Hyatt Singapore boast central locations near the shopping district as well as being less than 30 minutes away from any place in the city centre. Service at these hotels is excellent and aims to pamper their guests while the rooms are spacious and comfortable.
Cheapest Hostels Dorms in Fern Loft
Budget accommodation in Singapore starts from S$15 for a dorm bed and S$25 for a single room. Located all across the country, the best value for money options would be those near Bugis, Little India or Kampong Glam. This way, you save both time and money as most of Singapore's popular attractions are located around these nucleus.
Because of competition, the cheapest hostels in Singapore are priced equally but vary in terms of facilities offered. Here, we highlight the best hostels which go for that universal price.
Rooms are best booked at least a month or three weeks in advance, and are best made through their official websites.
Hawaii Hostel
Hawaii Hostel offers the cheapest accommodation in Singapore. Bang on location but short on everything else, its rooms are still spotless and livable. Dorms go for S$15 with single and double rooms from S$25 - S$35.
It is located near Sim Lim Square, Sri Krishnan Temple and Kuan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple. You will never go hungry here as 24 hour coffee shop options are endless.
The Hive
The Hive, though located at the far end of Little India, is a good deal though priced at S$20 for a dorm bed, similar to other hostels in the area. With female-only and mixed dorms, it also has a single room priced at S$35. One of its quirks is its themed rooms Lily Room and Sakura Room. The former is painted in hot red whilst the latter exudes a Zen-like feel.
It offers bang for your buck, with free local calls, cable television and a daily newspaper.
