In 'Warp and Weft' a Leicestershire mill owner's uneventful life is set to change. His daughter Veeve discovering her husband's infidelity, demands a divorce. When Veeve is told to stay in France to avoid the scandal, Ruth, her younger sister, refuses to abandon her. The outbreak of the First World War severs the friendship between the sisters, with tragic consequences. Ruth returns from Paris with her three year old son and thirteen year old nephew, Veeve's son. She is stubbornly silent about her war years. One man is determined to uncover her secret and the build up to the Second World War gives him his opportunity.
