This book presents an introduction to the fundamentals of turbulent flow. Its focus is on understanding the equations of motion for various classes of flow and elucidating the most crucial and practically important aspects of the physics. A major goal is to provide a framework and the tools necessary for considering common flows in industry or the environment, or for pursuing fundamental study of turbulence in any context.
Classical analyses of canonical flows are presented, but supplemented by wisdom arising from the last few decades of research, much of which was not available during preparation of previous texts. Each chapter includes a brief biography of a 'subject giant' of the field. Practical exercises are provided, some of which make use of online data sets that can be accessed directly, along with typical codes which can be used to analyse data produced by numerical or laboratory experiments. These allow teachers to analyse their own data sets or to construct a wide range of further student exercises.
Ian Castro was Professor of Fluid Dynamics and Founder-Director of the Environmental Flow Research Centre at the University of Surrey. Since 2000 he has been at the University of Southampton, where he is now Emeritus Professor of Fluid Dynamics.
Christina Vanderwel is Associate Professor at the University of Southampton. She is a previous holder of a Marie Curie Fellowship and a current holder of a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship.
