South African weather and atmospheric phenomena

Why is the sky blue? What is the life cycle of a lightning bolt? Where is the end of the rainbow? The state of the weather colours every day of our lives, but although it is an inexhaustible subject of comment and speculation, few people have more than the vaguest understanding of its dynamics. Part I features subjects that are usually associated with the term 'weather': climate, forecasting, clouds, thunderstorms, cold fronts, rainfall, etc. Part II is about optical atmospheric phenomena: the dispersion of sunlight into its component colours by water drops and ice crystals in the atmosphere, which creates a host of spectacular phenomena such as rainbows and fogbows, sundogs, solar and lunar coronas and eclipses, and the circumzenithal arch. This is a title for everyone who has an appreciation of nature and science - there is a wealth of weather phenomena waiting to be discovered and appreciated.
