This volume, one of a series of studies in neurosciences, originates from a symposium held in Pushino, USSR. The meeting, devoted to the roles of signal molecules in animal behaviour, was sponsored by the USSR Academy of Sciences. Divided into three sections, it first presents cellular and invertebrate models, covering the interaction of signal molecules at neuronal level and transmitter-dependent behavioural states. This section is followed by vertebrate models, including papers addressing drug-induced behaviours, developmental neurobiology of signal molecules and the behavioural effects of neuroactive substances. The final section covers methodology.
