When the European Parliament needed information on animal welfare issues, it turned to the Eurogroup for Animal Welfare, which unites the leading animal welfare organisations in the Member States of the European Union.

The Eurogroup seeks to convene a unified animal welfare voice with which to lobby the European Institutions, and to provide sound scientific evidence and detailed factual information to support arguments for legislative change in the field of animal welfare.

This book brings together two documents initially prepared by the Eurogroup at the instigation of the European Parliament's Intergroup on the Welfare and Conservation of Animals. For each of over 30 specific areas of concern (such as transport, wildlife trade, genetic manipulation of livestock and research animals, and entertainment involving animals), the first section of the book fully explains:

reasons for concern

economic and consumer considerations

existing and proposed legislation

possible EU initiatives.

The second section provides a detailed summary of all relevant legislation at the levels of the EC and the Council of Europe, as well as judgments of the European Court of Justice that specifically relate to animal welfare matters.
