Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson continue their 1892 Canadian travels, by stagecoach, sleigh, horse, train, naval ship, inland canoe and fifty-foot war canoe, making their way across the prairies, through the Rockies, to Vancouver Island and north to Cariboo country. In Calgary, they assist Superintendent Sam Steele of the N.W.M.P. in his inquiries, to track down "cattle thieves, whiskey smugglers, rogues and confidence men." On an exhilarating ride through Kicking Horse Pass, they share the cow catcher with Sarah Bernhardt, whose Vancouver performance of La Dame aux camelias is, writes Watson, "undoubtedly the most moving theatrical experience I have ever had."
