The story focuses on key characters, including Federal Game Warden, Charlie Palmer and his wife, Doctor Miranda Palmer, Charlie's partner, Danny Devore and his wife Carol, along with their children, and Melvin Crawford, a mentally unstable Vietnam veteran seeking murderous revenge for his family's misfortunes on which he blames the game wardens.

This story unfolds in and around the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge, located along the Gulf Coast of north-central Florida. Charlie and Miranda have built a home on the banks of the Santa Fe River near High Springs. Amidst the foreboding atmosphere of an impending hurricane, already dubbed the "Storm of the Century", Charlie learns of Crawford's return, raising concerns for his family's safety. Crawford threatens the lives not only the game wardens and their families, but a local deputy and judge as well.

To underscore his intent, Crawford has already planted multiple bombs in the area and left a personally cruel message by seriously injuring Charlie's dog at Charlie's home while he and Miranda were at work. He even left a taunting note on their kitchen table. This horrific act underscores his dangerous mindset and intentions for revenge.

The story escalates as the hurricane approaches landfall and the whole world goes dark. Can they find Melvin Crawford before someone is killed?
