In Volume 5 the series Physical Methods of Chemistry turns its attention to methods that are used primarily to determine structure in solids, mostly crystalline solids. The techniques used range from those such as X-ray diffraction, which is applicable to the long-range structure of the perfect crystal; to those probing the local order in less perfect crystals; to the magnetic spectroscopies, which are used mostly to study the immediate environment of impurities on defects. Chapters have been written by world-class authors who are widely recognised in their fields.
