An illustrated history of the Navy and its ships from the first steam warships of 1850 to the demise of the fleet at the Revolution in 1917. The history section, which describes the events, personnel and policies of the period, is followed by a reference sector which lists every vessel in detail and illustrates most of them by rare, mostly unpublished photographs. The illustrations of the almost circular "floating forts" should be of particular interest.
