Composite video was developed solely to provide a way of broadcasting colour television in a way which would be compatible with existing monochrome receivers. It requires no more bandwidth than a monochrome signal, and so full bandwidth monochrome video recorders could be simply adapted to record colour, and the composite video recorder was born. This is not just a theory book, because it also contains numerous examples of current practice, nor is it just an introductory book, because the detailed descriptions omit nothing of consequence and there are references for those interested in deeper study.
