The Editor: Jacques Waardenburg, born in 1930 in Haarlem (The Netherlands), is a distinguished scholar in the field of religious studies. He studied theology and comparative religion in Amsterdam, and Arabic and Islam in Leiden, Paris, and Cairo. With a continuous interest in questions of method and theory of the discipline he taught and did research in Montréal, Paris, Los Angeles, and Utrecht. At present he holds the chair of Science des religions at the University of Lausanne. He is also president of the Swiss Association of Religious Studies. Among his many publications are Classical Approaches to the Study of Religion (2 vols., 1973/74), Reflections on the Study of Religion (1978), Religionen und Religion. Systematische Einführung in die Religionswissenschaft (1986, French ed. 1993).
