The Council of the European Union adopted a Directive with a view to establishing certain co-determination rights at the European level on 22 September 1994. The Directive required implementation by each of the Member States prior to 22 September 1996.

As a result, in the coming years, a large number of multinational companies with European Community-scale dimensions will be required to establish a European Works Council or a procedure for informing and consulting employees.

The European Works Council in the Netherlands provides a concise guide to the steps that management must take to establish a European Works Council with a clear reference to the relevant time frames. It includes an English translation of the current text of the Dutch implementing statute, an explanation of its key issues, and an analysis of the provisions at variance with the Directive.

This book is useful to all those managers and employee representatives responsible for negotiating and operating European Works Councils and to those practitioners and researchers interested in monitoring and understanding these developments.
