This volume publishes the information contained in the announcements of popular entertainments which appeared in the Diaro de Madrid from its foundation in 1758; it complements volume VII in the series, which covers the same years and contains documentation from various archives. The present book fleshes out many of the performances mentioned in the previous volume, offering a rich and detailed panorama of popular entertainments in Madrid over a period of almost a century. Many were new or had recently been developed - peepshows, the cosmorama, advanced magic lanterns, the phantasmagoria, shadow-puppets, the circus -and many were introduced by foreigners, but genuinely Spanish subjects and traditions survive. The backgroundto these entertainments is a Spain in evolution from the Enlightenment to the rise of liberalism. J.E. VAREY is Professor Emeritus from the University of London.
