Dharam Raj Uprety was born in 1973 in Navadurga VDC-7, Dadeldhura district of Nepal. He took his master's degree in sociology and anthropology at Tribhuvan University in Nepal and worked from 1996 to 2002 in the Ministry of Forestry and Soil Conservation, Department of Plant Resources. In July 2006 he took his doctor's degree (Dr. nat. techn.) at the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna.
