The Japanese have long used colourfully printed paper to decorate everything from boxes to dolls. Washi - paper made by hand from the fibrous bark of three indigenous plants - is noted for its strength, durability, and flexibility, and is the favorite paper used by the Japanese for their crafts. Washi is available in a rich array of colours, textures, weights, and patterns. Elements of Japan's great textile tradition are reflected in its cultural motifs (kimonos, fans, and kabuki actors) as well as in its classic designs from nature (flowers, bamboo, and cranes).
