He grew up in Tasmanian hydro construction towns after emigrating with his parents as a child from the UK. He is a semi-retired academic but 'in another life' he earned his living as a rigger in construction and heavy industry. He is the author of numerous non-fiction publications including a short history of Cambodia and a social history of the world rubber industry. John is a keen bushwalker. He has walked in many places around the world but believes that Tasmania is up there with the best of them.
