Everyday Life Practices of Muslims in Europe explores how Muslims give meaning to Islam on a day-to-day basis. The contributions look at concrete practices, identities, memories, and normalities in daily Muslim life and provide insights to the complexities of identities. They examine Muslims' use of and construction of spaces, daily practices, forms of interaction, and modes of thinking in different areas, resulting in a thorough analysis and framework of Muslims' day-to-day life through topical chapters on food, space, entertainment, marriage, and mosque, covering the extent of hybridity and the preservation of religious-ethnic particularities. Over heel veel zaken doen moslims er het zwijgen toe. Er is bijvoorbeeld heel wat volksdevotie, maar dat is in feite verboden en dus .. bestaat het zogezegd niet. In Europa vieren ook veel moslims kerstmis onder invloed van het christendom, maar ook dat bestaat zogezegd niet. Diverse auteurs buigen zich over moslimgebruiken die onder invloed van de Europese context aan verandering onderhevig zijn. Buitenstaanders hebben het gevoel dat de moslimcultuur zich onwrikbaar oplegt aan de westerse cultuur, maar uit deze studie blijkt het tegendeel. Vele gebruiken (voedingspatronen, huwelijksgebruiken, seksualiteitsbeleving ...) veranderen wel degelijk in een poging om te accultureren, maar onder invloed van de media die enkel de extremen in beeld brengt, geloven vele Westerlingen in een fundamentalistische en statische islam. Het is aan de andere kant wel een feit dat onder invloed van het fundamentalisme deze pogingen tot acculturatie onder druk komen te staan.
