Today, more than a century and a half after his death, Goethe remains Germany's most famous author, and some of his major works are still readily available in English. His short narratives, however, are almost unknown outside Germany, chiefly because, with one exception, they are buried in longer works that have been largely forgotten by all but Goethe scholars. Since these fine tales deserve a kinder fate, the present collection aspires to introduce them, together with a representative selection of the author's poems, to an English-reading public.
